Ionian islands
The Ionian archipelagos is situated in Inonian sea. These Islands possess their own distinct allure, making them an excellent destination for both motor and sailing yacht vacations.
The Ionian Archipelago
This island group, known as Eptanisa (The Seven Islands), includes Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxi, and Kythera. Situated along Greece’s western coastline, they offer an ideal sailing route for a Mediterranean yacht charter. Due to a historical period of Italian rule, these islands feature a unique architectural style and cultural character that set them apart from the rest of Greece. During spring, many of these islands are covered in wildflowers, adding to their charm. Lefkada, for example, is known for its many secluded coves, while Zakynthos (Zante) still retains the essence of traditional Greece. In the island’s rural areas, locals maintain their old customs, with elderly women dressed in black observing life from their doorsteps. For those willing to take a break from the tranquility of their yacht, renting a moped is a great way to explore these cultural and scenic gems.
Fiskardo,Cephalonia
Nestled on the northern tip of Cephalonia, Fiskardo is a sailor’s dream—a harbor that seems lifted straight from the pages of a Mediterranean fairytale. As a sailing charter captain, few places in the Ionian Sea stir excitement among my guests quite like this one. Approaching the harbor by boat, the first thing you notice is the charm: pastel-colored Venetian buildings cascading down the hillside, mirrored perfectly in the turquoise waters below. Unlike many Greek villages that fell victim to the 1953 earthquake, Fiskardo survived largely untouched. This gives it an old-world character rare in the Ionian islands. The quay is often lined with yachts, catamarans, and traditional wooden kaïkia, and securing a berth can feel like a small victory during high season. But the effort is always worth it.
Assos, Cefalonia
Assos is a quaint village famed for its vibrant houses, winding lanes, and a Venetian castle that offers views of the bay. It's an enchanting spot perfect for peaceful walks, refreshing dips in the clear turquoise waters, or savoring a traditional meal at one of the charming local tavernas.
Ithaka: Sailing into Homer’s Homeland
From the helm of a sailing charter, few destinations capture the imagination quite like Ithaka. Steeped in Homeric legend, this rugged Ionian island welcomes sailors with quiet anchorages, pine-covered hills, and a sense of myth that clings to every cove. Vathi, the main harbor, offers excellent shelter and a charming waterfront lined with tavernas perfect for an evening mooring. Beyond the harbor, hidden bays like Kioni and Frikes reward those who venture off the beaten path with crystal-clear waters and authentic Greek hospitality.
